A wood is not a backdrop that stays still. Between April and October it is green and long-evening; between November and March it is dark by four and lit by fire. Both are good. They are not the same day, and they are not the same price.
Everything structural stays the same all year: the ceremony clearing is licensed, the tipis or tent go up for you, the washrooms are plumbed and the canvas is heated. What changes is what the wood is doing around it, and what a Saturday is worth.
The wood wakes up in weeks rather than months. The bluebells come through from late April, while the canopy is still opening — so the floor is blue and the light can still get down to it. That overlap lasts about a fortnight and it is the only time of year you get both at once. Mornings are cold and afternoons are not; nobody has ever minded a coat in the dusk photographs.
The oaks close overhead and the wood goes green and about five degrees cooler than the field next to it — which is the entire point in July. You can eat outside without anyone melting, and the sun does not go down until close to ten, so the fire pits are lit while it is still light. This is the season everyone asks for first, and the one that goes first.
Late September into the middle of October is the best-looking fortnight of the year here, and it is consistently the last to sell. The oaks go copper, the sun comes in sideways through the trunks all afternoon instead of straight down, and it is still warm enough to be outside for drinks. If you care more about how the day looks than which month is printed on the invitation, ask us about October first.
The canvas is heated and the fire pits do the rest. It is dark by four, so the festoons, the candles and the fires are working through the whole evening rather than the last hour of it. A winter wedding here looks like the photographs people save rather than like a compromise — and it is the cheapest the forty acres ever is.
